Research

As a designer and artist, my focus stays on shaping the emotional experiences others have. I am also exploring the intersection of education and technology with art, and how we might better combine each to convey information in a new way, through story and effortless design.

Bloomers: Exploring Education Through Play

Spring 2026

Click here to head to my page fully dedicated to the project.

Bloomers is an immersive pollination game, which I used as a tool to conduct research on teaching others through play. I also investigated how different modes of technology impact different audience groups.

The main research questions were:

  1. How does the use of advanced technology impact an immersive experience?

  2. How might immersive experiences have community impact?

  3. Can people of all ages learn something new through an immersive game, and what methods impact learning for specific audiences?

Bloomers was thus a case study that attempted to answer these questions. In total, I reached more than 70 people with the event and learned many things from them.

Below is a PDF to the full research documentation, and you can easily read about my findings through the presentation imbedded below.

Gym User Experience Research

Spring 2026

I conducted user experience research for major local gyms in the Tempe, AZ area. This was done to:

  • observe and document everyday experiences

  • identifying room for improvement at each location

I interviewed 15 different individuals over the course of 3 months in 3 different research stages.

The research methods and findings are summarized in a video below.

A Forest's Worth

Fall 2025, Led by William Jesse Martinez

A Forest's Worth is a combination VR and projected immersive experience designed to submerge its audiences in the beauty that is the Tongass National Forest, while also educating them on the importance of roadless area conservation and how it impacts the local and tribal communities of South East Alaska. You may read more at AForestsWorth.com.

This project was led by William Jesse Martinez, a graduate student at the ASU Mix Center studying experience design. I joined him in the preproduction phase of this research journalism project. We were a team of three, joined by fellow graduate student Anish Powar. Together in the summer of 2025, we journey to Alaska to conduct qualitative interviews with 5 local figures, as well as video and photo documentation of the deforestation happening in the Tongass National Forest.

REMIX The Future Hackathon - Tech for Change

Fall 2025

Posters MUST include Problem Statement or Introduction to Topic (with at least 3 citations

REMIX The Future was an ASU hosted Hackathon in October 16th-19th of 2025. Event Info Here.

I served as a mentor at this 4-day hackathon, specifically in the experience design track. I researched best methods of teaching new programs (Touch Designer and Pixera) to beginner technologists.

To the right is a research poster inspired by my research. I opened the door into many different topics, such as teaching through VR/AR and either methods effectiveness.

Immersive Design Education for Change Research Poster, Lilliana Lopez

Below is a Touch Designer template and presentation I created to help Hackers learn at a faster pace during the event. During each day of the Hackathon, I was there to provide more insight and answer questions, as well as give tutorials as they learned.
